Understanding Response Data

Brand Mentions

PromptFern highlights when your brand appears in responses. Mentions are detected based on:

  • Your brand name
  • Configured aliases
  • Domain references
  • Product names

Competitor Mentions

Competitor mentions are also tracked. This helps you understand:

  • How often competitors appear alongside your brand
  • When competitors are recommended instead of you
  • Comparative positioning

Citation Sources

For AI models that cite sources (like Perplexity), you'll see which websites influenced the response. This data also appears in the Citations view.

Response Analysis Tips

Look for patterns

Don't focus on individual responses—look for trends:

  • Is your brand consistently mentioned for certain use cases?
  • Are there prompts where competitors dominate?
  • Which features or benefits are AI models emphasizing?

Compare across channels

Different AI platforms may position your brand differently:

  • ChatGPT might focus on features
  • Perplexity might emphasize reviews and comparisons
  • Claude might provide more balanced analysis

Track changes over time

AI models are updated regularly. Monitor how responses evolve:

  • New product launches appearing in responses
  • Changes in competitive positioning
  • Shifts in sentiment or recommendations

Exporting Responses

To export response data:

  1. Apply your desired filters
  2. Click the Export button
  3. Choose CSV or JSON format

Exports include all response metadata for further analysis.

Response Quality

AI responses are non-deterministic. The same prompt may get different answers on different runs. This is normal behavior—focus on trends rather than individual responses.

Factors affecting responses

  • Model updates: AI providers regularly update their models
  • Training data: What information the model has access to
  • Prompt wording: Subtle phrasing changes can affect outputs
  • Context window: Previous conversation context (for chat models)

Improving your visibility

If AI models aren't mentioning your brand:

  1. Improve online presence: AI models learn from web content
  2. Get cited in authoritative sources: Industry publications, review sites
  3. Publish helpful content: Answer the questions your audience asks
  4. Encourage reviews: Customer reviews on G2, Capterra, etc.
